When I started my virtual assistant business seven months ago, I didn’t expect for it to completely replace the income I made from my old employer. It has also offered me the freedom to work with other amazing boss women. When I first started, I had no idea how to gain new clients, but then a client referred me to a friend of hers who needed help.

Since then, I’ve gained quite a few new clients, and 90% of them have been referrals! Here are a few of the tips I’ve learned to get more client referrals as a virtual assistant.

Keep Current Clients Happy

You would think this is a no-brainer right? But it still needs to be said that keeping current clients happy is important. Think about it this way, when a client is happy, they will express that happiness. That could be via social media, telling a friend, or even sharing your info with another business owner.

If you don’t do anything else, keeping your current clients happy is the easiest way to get more client referrals. You could do nothing else, and you would still have happy clients telling the world how great your services are.

If a client is unhappy with your work, it isn’t the end of the world. Apologize, own up to your mistake, and move forward. Taking control of your responsibilities and mistakes could mean a referral too, especially if a client sees that you make every effort to keep them happy!

Thank Your Current Clients

Another awesome way to get more client referrals is to thank your current clients. You’d be surprised how far a thank you or small gift could get you. Now, this isn’t to say that you should only thank your current clients in hopes of getting referrals, but it is important to show them that you care and that their business means a lot to you. The referrals are just an extra perk.

So how do you thank your current clients? Well, if you don’t have a lot of money to spend, you could always just send a heartfelt email. Once you get a little more income, you could offer free work for loyal clients, a gift card to their favorite store, or a small gift around your client-contractor anniversary. Of course, you could also send them gifts and cards around the holidays too! There is never a bad time to thank current clients.

Tell Clients You Are Still For Hire

To get more client referrals, your current clients have to know you are still available! I’ve had clients ask me if I was too busy to take on someone new, and I’ve realized that they ask because I don’t offer my services enough! So I’ve gotten into the habit of asking clients every now and then if they have any more work for me, or if they know someone who might be able to use my services.

Sometimes a client may not have any more work for you, but they almost always know of someone who could use your help! By checking in with your clients every other month or so, you could be gaining new clients quicker than you can handle!

Create A Referral Program 

I’ve dabbled in a referral program lately, and I have to say that it has been a great way to get more client referrals. What’s great about a referral program is that everyone wins. I gain a new client, my current client gets a gift (it varies based on referrals) and my new client gets a discounted rate for a few hours! How could you say no to that?

Your referral program doesn’t have to be expensive, time-consuming, or even complicated. Start small by offering discounted rates for both the current client and new client. You can always update your referral program as time goes on. (Remember: don’t feel the need to discount so much that you aren’t making the money you need to survive.)

Market Your Client Testimonies

Okay, okay, so I know I said you can get more client referrals without marketing yourself too much. BUT, I do believe that it’s still important to show off your skills and happy clients. You don’t have to market yourself every single day, or even every week. Just take a little time to share clients testimonies, it can go a long way.

One of the ways I market client testimonies is by putting them on my hire me page. That way, when a potential client checks out my site, they get to see all of the hard work I’ve put in and the clients I’ve served! I also share client testimonies on my social media sites like my PinterestFacebook, Instagram, and Twitter. If my clients are okay with it, I’ll even tag them. This helps both of our followers see that I’m available, and gives me the chance to market my services without seeming salesy!

As you can see, these tips to get more client referrals don’t involve spending a ton of money or time, but they work. How do you get more client referrals?
