I’ve received quite a few emails from mompreneurs who are looking to save time on their growing businesses, while also getting their most important tasks done. While a task management system and quarterly planning have been my favorite tools for organizing my life and business, I started remembering how it felt when I was blogging and freelancing in addition to my full-time job. I barely had 10 hours a week to work on my business, and there were many weeks when I had less than 5! So how did I “do it all”? I’m sharing with you how I was able to get everything on my list done and how you can prioritize tasks in your business to accomplish more.

The Pick 3 Rule

So what exactly is the Pick 3 Rule? Basically, it just means that you’ll pick your top 3 tasks each day, week, and month that you must finish. These are your most important tasks, and choosing just 3 things that you need to do helps you prioritize tasks in your business, get more done, and maximize your profit.

How It Helps You Prioritize Tasks In Your Business

I get it, as a business owner, you have a lot to do. Unless you have a team or can outsource a bunch of tasks to other people, you’re usually the person doing it all. From social media to content creation to bookkeeping, you have to manage all of the different aspects of your business to keep it afloat.

However, the Pick 3 Rule helps you prioritize and compartmentalize all of those tasks because it forces you to focus on the main 3 things in your business that you have to finish in order to earn an income. Now, this isn’t to say that you focus on the same 3 tasks every single day for the next year. The Pick 3 Rule is all about picking 3 main tasks to complete daily, weekly, and monthly. That way, you can accomplish your main goal, whatever that may be.

How To Use The Pick 3 Rule

Choose Your Main Goal

As I mentioned, the Pick 3 Rule is used to help you focus on achieving one main goal or objective. That will look different for every business and solopreneur across the board. However, your main goal should be the goal you set that either scales your business or earns you more money in the next year.

For example, your main goal could be earning $50,000 this year. Or, maybe your main goal is to create a product that will earn you passive income. Whatever it is, choose your main goal so you can then break it down into more manageable tasks.

The Monthly Pick 3

Okay, so you’ve picked your main goal. Your next step is to decide what you need to do to get there. So let’s take that example of earning $50,000 this year. That means you need to earn around $4,100 each month. Break that down a little further and that means you have to earn a little over $1,000 each week. How will you get there? What do you need to create and do each month to earn $4,100?

For my business, my top 3 goals would look a little something like this:

  1. Sell 20 copies of my ebook – $260
  2. Sell 50 spots to my monthly masterclass – $2,450
  3. Book 10 of my 90-minute strategy sessions – $1,590

Grand total earnings if I complete all of those? $4,300, a little over the $4,100 needed for the month. If I did that every month for 12 months, I’d make more than my $50,000 goal. All by choosing 3 monthly tasks! From there, it’s time to break those 3 monthly tasks into 3 weekly tasks.

The Weekly Pick 3

Once you’ve outlined your main goal and your 3 monthly to-dos, it’s time to break those down even further. Now it’s time to pick your top 3 weekly tasks.

Just as a note, your top weekly tasks should be different from week to week. Because you’re focusing on 3 main goals for the month, you need to fit your weekly and daily top 3 around achieving those. To continue my example, my typical weeks would be set up something like this:

Week One

  1. Create email funnel for ebook
  2. Email existing list masterclass info with a discount code for early bird special
  3. Offer 30-minute discovery calls for prospective consulting clients

Week Two 

  1. Post about masterclass on social media all week (each day create a new promotion graphic and post)
  2. Email list about openings in my schedule for strategy sessions
  3. Email affiliates with a special discount code for their audience to entice them to purchase my ebook

Week Three 

  1. Create flip-through of ebook and post on social media. Also, throw in testimonials for Facebook and Instagram Stories
  2. Offer last-minute sign-ups for the masterclass, create a sense of urgency since the price will go up for the replay
  3. Write a blog post and have CTA be a discount strategy call for a certain amount of sessions

Week Four

  1. Offer replay of the masterclass ($10 higher than when it was live)
  2. Create email blast for ebook + add in a bonus or freebie just for those that buy the ebook that week
  3. Add Hello Bar pop up to my website for strategy sessions

As you can see, each week my top 3 relate to my top 3 monthly goals, but they change from week to week so I can focus on a new and fresh perspective, plus reach out to a wider audience, not just those on my email list or on social media.

The Daily Pick 3

Oh yes, we’re breaking this down even further. Now, I’m not going to break down my top 3 for each day of the month based on my examples above, but as long as my daily top 3s allowed me to reach my weekly (and monthly) goals, I would know I was going in the right direction.

For example, in week one, one day I would focus solely on creating my emails for my email funnel, getting it set up, and setting up automations through Zapier so I could separate those that bought the ebook vs. those that didn’t. That, to me, would be considered 3 tasks. The next day, I might focus on social media graphics, adding spots to my schedule for the 30-minute calls, and emailing my existing list with my masterclass information.

See how that all works? My daily top 3 is in alignment with my weekly top 3. And then, my weekly top 3 is in alignment with my monthly top 3. If I first focus on the big picture (earning $50,000 in a year) and then break it down into 3 manageable tasks, I’m able to clear distractions and stay focused on my ultimate goal. And that’s how you achieve what you want to achieve, without having to worry about ALL THE THINGS.

Why The Pick 3 Rule Overrides All Other Productivity Rules

So does the Pick 3 Rule really work? Of course! And I think the Pick 3 Rule is the #1 way to focus on what you really need to do in your business, especially when you’re first getting started. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with information and to-do lists. But, the only true way to prioritize tasks in your business, is to know which direction you want your business to go, and then focusing on the top tasks that will get you there.

3 tasks each day, week, and month are easier to remember and accomplish than 20+ different tasks each day that are each pulling you in a different direction. While your business will grow and scale with time, when you’re first starting out, or when you don’t have a way to outsource, using the Pick 3 Rule will come in handy.
